how clear aligners work coastal dental care

What are clear aligners and how do they work?

Clear aligners, also known as invisible braces, work by helping you to straighten your teeth over time using custom-made clear plastic aligners that gently move your teeth over time. Clear aligners are an effective orthodontic alternative to the traditional method of aligning teeth through metal brackets and braces, and they are more aesthetically pleasing and easier to use. If you are looking to straighten up your smile, we can offer you the option of Invisalign Go clear aligners at The White Bite!

What are Invisalign Go clear aligners?

Invisalign Go is a brand of clear aligner therapy which can straighten minor to moderate misalignment cases. Depending on your case, Invisalign Go treatment may take only three to nine months as opposed to a full Invisalign treatment which may go on for longer. This is because full Invisalign is required for teeth which may be severely misaligned and require more time to move back into your natural aesthetic look. There are many clear aligner companies available in the market but Invisalign uses a proprietary teeth straightening system called SMARTForce technology which enables tooth movement to be achieved through attachments placed on teeth and a series of custom-made clear plastic removable aligners. The aligners must be worn for at least 22 – 23 hours a day to effectively straighten your teeth.

What is the process to get started with clear aligner treatment?

During your initial consultation, your dentist will take records of the condition of your teeth, which can include photographs, xrays and a digital scan of your teeth. If you are needing general dental treatment such as a scale and clean, fillings or other treatment, this treatment will generally be done prior to starting your clear aligner therapy.

Once we have assessed your case and determined that you are eligible for Invisalign Go, you will attend the clinic for a second consultation to discuss your specific case including sequence and time of treatment, cost and other details.

Once you have decided you would like to proceed, a deposit will be required to get started on your treatment, and the aligners will be manufactured.

Your dentist will then arrange for you to attend the clinic at set intervals to issue the aligners, place attachments, and check that you are progressing appropriately in your orthodontic treatment.

What are the advantages of clear aligners?

There are many advantages of using clear aligners. Some of these include:

Effective with less discomfort

Clear aligner therapy works because the plastic applies gentle forces to the teeth over time to move your teeth.  With metal brackets and braces there are sometimes cases where the metal can cut the lips or stick out and irritate the soft tissue in the mouth; however, this does not happen with clear aligners as it is a clear plastic material.

Clear and discreet

Clear aligners are not as visible as traditional metal brackets and braces, and from a distance are almost imperceptible.

Easier to perform good oral hygiene

Clear aligners need to be worn for 22-23 hours a day to be effective. However, as they are shaped similarly to a very thin mouthguard, they can be easily removed while you eat, drink, or brush and floss your teeth. This allows you to easily clean your teeth, as opposed to the case of metal brackets and braces, which often cause food to get caught in between the teeth and are difficult to clean.

Your aligners will be custom-made to suit the structure of your teeth. Over time, you will be able to collect new trays from your dentist which will be a slightly different shape, depending on what stage of treatment you are at.

This is done to gradually move your teeth into their natural position over time.
